Though bushytails were once the only early season game in town, local sportsmen can now choose from a variety of fall hunting activities. Oddly, few Illinois sportsmen take advantage of this overlooked resource. In many areas, both species are available to hunters. Larger acreages of bottomland timber yield excellent hunting for grays. The area’s farmland woodlots with their mast-producing oaks and hickories often teem with fox squirrels. And best of all, social distancing is not a problem. When it comes to squirrels, however, central Illinois offers a cornucopia of hunting opportunities. In a part of the state that is heavy on hunters but light on public lands, finding quality hunting opportunities for many popular game species can be a challenging task.
